Next Fertility Nordic offers the following genetic tests:
- Chromosomal analysis
- Carrier screening (Igenomics CGT, CGTPlus)
- Pre-implantation genetic screening (genetic testing of embryos)
- Prenatal screening (NIPTIFY)
We recommend a genetic counselling consultation for patients with a known family history of genetic diseases or for anyone wanting to find out if there are any heritable diseases in the family.
Pre-testing counselling
Pre-test counselling lasts approximately 60 minutes and involves gathering health information, family history, and generating a family tree.
The genetic background of a particular disease will be explained, and if you are considering testing, the appropriate testing will be recommended in each case.
Post-testing counselling
Post-test counselling lasts approximately 30 minutes and involves an explanation of the test results to the test person and family members.
If a genetic test has already been performed in the past, you may need help interpreting the results or have questions such as:
• How should I interpret the result of a genetic test, what does it mean to me?
• How does the test result affect the health risks of my offspring or relatives?
• Who can I contact for further monitoring and support?
Genetic counsellor
The consultation is guided by your goals, interests, and concerns. The counsellor can:
- Help you understand the role of genes in certain diseases and health indicators,
- Introduce different testing options, enabling you to make informed decisions,
- Interpret the results of the test and creates a possible future action plan,
- Explain the impact of hereditary risks on your family members,
- Provide emotional support,
- Suggest where to get additional information.
The genetic counsellor helps to explain, among other things, how the test results can affect the health risks of offspring or relatives.
About Liis Leitsalu, PhD:
Liis Leitsalu earned a bachelor’s degree in Genetics from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and a master’s degree in Human Genetics from Sarah Lawrence College in the United States. Liis then went onto obtain a PhD in Gene Technology from the University of Tartu which involved communicating genomic research results to population-based biobank participants.
In addition to being a genetic counselling intern at multiple international medical facilities, Liis has experience working at the Estonian Genome Center of the University of Tartu.
In 2021, she obtained a Genetic Counsellor Certification from the European Board of Medical Genetics and holds membership with the Estonian Society of Medical Genetics.
