Embryo biopsy has been offered in our clinic since 2023. Our goal is to identify embryos with the best chance of leading to a healthy pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is PGT-A?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/en\/services\/embryo-genetic-testing\/\">PGT-A is a test<\/a> that checks whether an embryo has the correct number of chromosomes (euploid) or not (aneuploid).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On day 5 or 6 of embryo development, a few cells are carefully removed from a blastocyst.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These cells are sent to a genetics lab for analysis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The embryos are frozen while results are processed (around 2 weeks).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If at least one healthy embryo is confirmed, preparations for a frozen embryo transfer can begin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This process reduces the chance of transferring embryos that cannot implant or would ultimately result in miscarriage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"885\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2.png 885w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2-768x513.png 768w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2-370x247.png 370w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2-770x514.png 770w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-2-740x494.png 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 885px) 100vw, 885px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">All the Stats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At our clinic in<a href=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/en\/results\/\"> 2024<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>33 IVF cycles included embryo biopsies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>139 blastocysts were tested<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4 embryos were re-biopsied (i.e biopsy was performed 2 times)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 1 and 8 embryos were sent per patient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The average number of embryos per test was 4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Patient Age Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A common question is: \u201cHow many eggs do I need for PGT-A to work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women under 35 need ~4 mature eggs to produce 1 healthy embryo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women around 42 may need ~20 mature eggs for 1 healthy embryo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, older women often have lower ovarian reserve, so the odds per cycle are slim-mer. To improve chances, many choose to batch embryos across multiple cycles before testing. It is important to set the expectations realistically with patients.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"280\" src=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1.png 680w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1-300x124.png 300w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1-370x152.png 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When batching cycles, it is important to freeze the embryos at the morula stage (on day 4 of development) because this makes the biopsy procedure smoother for the Embryologists AND causes less stress to the embryos after thawing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reports<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From all the embryos tested in 2024:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>50% were genetically abnormal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3.6% of embryos returned with \u201cno result\u201d (cells didn\u2019t make it into the testing tube)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3.6% were \u201cnon-informative\u201d (DNA couldn\u2019t be accurately analyzed)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>34% of patients who chose PGT had no normal embryos available for transfer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1024x476.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1024x476.png 1024w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-768x357.png 768w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-370x172.png 370w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-770x358.png 770w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-740x344.png 740w, https:\/\/next-fertilitynordic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image.png 1077w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30 frozen embryo transfers with euploid embryos were performed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>57% <\/strong>of those transfers resulted in a clinical pregnancy per embryo transfer procedure (confirmed by fetal sac on 6-week ultrasound)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our patients who benefited from PGT last year were women 35 and over using their own eggs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>35\u201339 years of age: <strong>80% <\/strong>clinical pregnancy rate with PGT (vs 29% without PGT).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u226540 year of age: <strong>80% <\/strong>clinical pregnancy rate with PGT (vs 19% without PGT).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This was one of the first years we\u2019ve seen higher success rates in women over 40 \u2014 giving new hope for patients in this age category in our clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why We Don\u2019t Transfer Aneuploid Embryos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show aneuploid embryos have almost no reproductive potential. A trial of 102 aneu-ploid embryo transfers resulted in 0 live births (Tiegs et al. 2020). Other studies are also showing 0-1% chance of a healthy live birth when an aneuploid embryo is transferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risks are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Failed implantation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Miscarriage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Birth of a child with genetic abnormality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For these reasons, knowingly transferring aneuploid embryos is considered unethical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Important reminder: Even with PGT, a healthy embryo does not guarantee a pregnancy or live birth. Around 45% of our current PGT pregnancies are ongoing \u2014 other factors such as hormones, uterine environment, and immune response still play a role in implantation and continuation of the pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Embryo Selection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When choosing the first embryo to transfer, Embryologists look at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Morphology (how the embryo looks under the microscope over culture for 5\u20136 days).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI-generated developmental scores (CHLOE) based on implantation potential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notes from fertilization, biopsy, and freezing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even the \u201cbest-looking\u201d embryo may not be genetically normal \u2014 which is why PGT results take priority in selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Takeaways<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In our clinic, PGT improves the IVF success rates for women aged 35 and over.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PGT shortens the path to pregnancy by avoiding transfers of embryos with no potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We are pleased to state almost all biopsied embryos expanded nicely after being thawed before transfer (and thus survived the biopsy procedure!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many women undergoing IVF, one of the biggest challenges is the uncertainty of whether implantation will be successful.
