Estonia has very liberal and patient friendly IVF regulations which enables to help different family types. Fertility treatments are well regulated, and IVF clinics are regularly inspected by local authorities to maintain high standards. From January 2024, Artificial Insemination and Embryo Protection Act was updated together with Family law which have brought new opportunities for married female couples and single women and couples who need donor gametes.
Below we highlight most important facts in Estonian IVF regulations:
- Women up to 51 years are permitted to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF).
- Assisted reproduction is legally available to married, unmarried couples, single women and married female couples in medical and social reasons.
- Option to use anonymous donor gametes but also gametes from known non-partner donor.
- Non-partner donor is known person to the recipient, but has no legal responsibilities or rights towards the future child.
- Donor gametes can be used for up to six different women to conceive in Estonia.
- Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is allowed.
- Sex selection of embryos is allowed only in medical reasons.
- Surrogacy is not permitted. Woman who gives birth will be the mother of the child.
- Up to three embryos are allowed to be transferred but usually single embryo transfer is performed.
- Embryos can be stored for up to 7 years from the date of freezing.
- Egg and sperm freezing is allowed for both medical and social reasons with no storage time limit.
