WHAT IS EGG DONATION?

Egg donation means that a young and healthy woman donates her eggs to help another woman build a family. Donated eggs are needed by women whose own egg quantity or quality has significantly decreased.

WHO CAN BECOME AN EGG DONOR?

Egg donation is a personal and voluntary decision, motivated by the wish to help families who want to have children. The health of both donors and future children is our top priority, which is why the following important criteria apply to egg donors:

  • You are between 20-32 years old
  • You are in good mental and physical health, and there are no hereditary diseases in your family
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is below 28 to ensure the safety of the procedure

Each donor undergoes thorough counselling and medical screening and receives feedback about their own health and fertility.

Free health examinations include:

  • Counselling (clinical psychologist, peer support specialist)
  • Gynecologist visit and ovarian reserve assessment
  • Genetic testing (chromosome analysis and gene panel testing for more than 100 common diseases)
  • Genetic counselling (if needed)
  • Testing for common sexually transmitted infections

EGG DONATION CONSISTS OF SEVERAL STAGES:

Consultation
After completing a health questionnaire, the donor will have a detailed consultation. During this process, the egg donation procedure is introduced, and the content of the consent form and agreement is explained.

Doctor’s visit and tests
After the consultation, suitable candidates are invited to see a doctor. The doctor assesses the donor’s ovarian reserve and prescribes the necessary tests and examinations.

Stimulation
Stimulation usually lasts 9–12 days and involves hormone treatment aimed at encouraging multiple eggs to mature simultaneously in the ovaries. During this period, two ultrasound scans are typically performed at the clinic. A similar preparatory treatment is also used for women freezing their eggs or undergoing fertility treatment.

Egg retrieval
Ovarian puncture is a short procedure performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the doctor aspirates the follicles containing the eggs. After the procedure, the donor remains at the clinic for a few hours to recover.

Compensation
The egg donor receives compensation of up to 1200 euros for a single donation. Travel expenses related to clinic visits may also be reimbursed if necessary.

Egg donation in Estonia is anonymous. Only general biological and social information about the donor is shared with the woman/couple seeking a child: ethnicity, skin color, education, etc.
