Men’s Health Specialist Consultation
A men’s health specialist, or andrologist, is a medical doctor specializing in male reproductive health. During a consultation, men’s health is assessed comprehensively — including fertility, hormone levels, sexual function, and the condition of the prostate and reproductive organs. You may book an appointment for infertility-related concerns or for a preventive health check-up to gain a better understanding of your overall health and fertility.
What does an andrologist do?
A men’s health specialist (andrologist) focuses on:
- evaluation and treatment of male infertility
- diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders
- diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases
- evaluation and treatment of sexual dysfunction
- diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- preventive health examinations and counselling for men
If necessary, a physical examination may be performed during the appointment, and additional tests may be prescribed, such as blood tests, hormone analyses, semen analysis, or ultrasound examinations.
You should consider booking an appointment if you experience:
- difficulty conceiving or wish to assess your fertility
- abnormal semen analysis results
- erectile dysfunction or reduced sexual desire
- premature ejaculation
- pain, swelling, or discomfort in the testicles or groin area
- urinary problems, such as frequent urination or a weak urine stream
- suspicion of a sexually transmitted infection
- a desire for a preventive health check-up
The goal of a men’s health consultation is to identify the cause of symptoms and provide individualized, evidence-based treatment that supports a man’s health, confidence, and quality of life.
The primary examination for male fertility is spermogram
Semen Analysis
A semen analysis evaluates the number, motility, and morphology of sperm cells and provides important insight into male fertility.
The sample is collected at the clinic in a designated private room. Before the test, the patient should abstain from ejaculation for 2–4 days to ensure the most reliable results.
If necessary, the semen sample may also be collected at home, but this must be coordinated with the laboratory in advance. A home-collected sample must be kept at body temperature and delivered to the clinic within 30 minutes.
GUIDELINES for bringing a semen sample from home. Read here!
Semen Analysis Results
The results of a semen analysis are evaluated according to the reference values established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Normal spermogram parameters (WHO)
- semen volume ≥ 1.5 ml
- total sperm count ≥ 39 million
- sperm concentration ≥ 16 million/ml
- sperm motility ≥ 30%
- normal sperm morphology ≥ 4%
Additional Male Fertility Tests
If necessary, the andrologist may prescribe additional tests to identify the causes of infertility and determine the most suitable treatment or assisted reproductive technology (ART) solution.
- MAR test – evaluates antisperm antibodies
- IL-6 testing – from semen or prostatic secretion – a marker of local inflammation
- Functional tests (Eosin test) – assesses sperm viability and the proportion of sperm capable of fertilizing an egg
- Aerobic culture – detects aerobic bacteria that may indicate inflammation
- MiOXSYS measures oxidative stress in semen. Increased oxidative stress may indicate inflammation and can contribute to infertility or unsuccessful IVF treatment.
- HaloSperm test – helps identify causes of infertility by analyzing sperm DNA fragmentation and determining the proportion of sperm with fragmented DNA
- Biochemistry test – measures zinc, alpha-glucosidase, and fructose levels in seminal plasma, which serve as additional markers of infection and are also important indicators of fertility
